Yeah, sometimes x happen... even in the wonderful world of Disney, but I disgress.Posts below show why almost all low-to-mid Fi use 'lytic and marketing explain why Hi-Fi use so much expensive parts.
The regulator heat concerns me. Are you sure something doesn't behave eratic and ask mucho current? I doubt designers can go that low... You can always mesure the current either by direct current mesure or by introducing a 1 ohm between the output regulator and the circuit and read voltage across.
Also, did the 6V is in serie with the 12 one's? A problem in the 12V and everything get srew. And the input of the 12V reg. should be at 15V or so.
Caps issue is heat. Even if you've never go that high, higher spec'ed will have less electrolyte (spl?) evaporation, hence longer life. At the price point we are, why skimp there?
'lytics sound better with DC across them. Wild guess here, but it seems to patch a bit of DA loss or something like that. Mylar, never heard a difference between DC and AC-only signal. As you have already them, try it. If you don't like it, swap for Cerafine or drill the hood and put some excesively good sounding Angela tin-foil. You'll never come back but the look will be, err... well and resale value not far of the carpet.
