Re: I don't get it...Why not directly off the mains?

Never quite figured it out. I've built transformer based tube amps with a few hundred volts here and there (600V peak) and they bite very, very hard when you stop paying attention for even a moment. (Alas, this I know for certain.) I've never quite understood how a transformer could make things safer, assuming the unit was properly fused. What have I been missing? Thanks in advance.

Here's just one example:

Since 120 volt AC mains in the US have no center tap, it can only be effectively used for a single-ended power supply. Therefore your signal reference grounds will need to be tied to one side of the AC mains, most logically to neutral. Which would be all well and good until someone decides to flip the AC plug around. Now your signal grounds are tied to the hot side of the mains.

Do you see the safety issue this raises?
