Hi there,

>>>The problem was that I was approached with this request by phone, and had to answer something prior to peeking under the hood.<<<

Dont'cha hate when that happens.

>>>Are you a Black Gate believer like Quvortrup and Kondo?<<<

Not really. For Audio-circuits I tend to avoid BG's mostly. I make do with Ansar Supersound Film Capacitors and the occasional Elna Cerafine or Silmic.... These are readily available.

However, certain BG Capacitors are excellent. I recommend them to people for the digital side especially because they get results by simple "part swapping".... My personal approach is to combine panasonic HFQ (aka Puerism) or Nichicon PL Series 100uF/25V Units with a number of Chip Capacitors (0805 10nF 50V X7R in parallel with 0805 100nF 50V X7R - they are stacked over each other)...

It is a cheap job that often exceeds the perfomance of just fitting BG PK Series (their fastest apart from the NX-HQ) but the job is VERY FIDDELY....

>>>I just hate their delivery times and "holes" in the stocked range. That is why I would rather go plastic.<<<

Plastic is a no-no for the digital stuff... Too much inductance. You could use a few in tha Audio-stage, however around the DAC Chips and the Input/Filter I believe it's either Black gate or really fiddely work....

>>>Audibly the blackgated AN gear is really nice I must confess.<<<

Hmmm..... It seems to harmonice well in the general Audio-Note scheme of things. I feel BG's are notably coloured compared with good film Caps (like Ansar, Arcotronics, Hoveland and REL/MIT or the old KP1832 ERO ones).... But that is a matter of taste.

>>>The problems started when the owner A-B'd the DAC-2 (already NOS tubed plus AN-copper foil paper in oil) with my Wadia. Bass was infinitely better with the 16, and the rest was just plain a little better.<<<

The Bass problem is down (IMHO) to three things:

1) PSU way too soft. use a Valve based Shunt Regulator running some serious current and all will be better.

2) Transformer I/V.... Try (just for fun) a simple RC circuit followed by further simple 1st order RC Lowpass instead of all that silverwired transformery....

3) Output Capacitor.... Try something good. I have as yet only found one position where PIO Cap's sound good. The X-Over for my Visaton Horntweeters....

>>>So he got his upgrade bug, but I hate to see him blowing his annual income on overpriced shit like Wadia. (hehehe)<<<

I think the Bass problems are primarily in the analoge stages. The rest is probably down to the Digital Filter used (one could upgrade to a SM5843 and use the "short" filter algorythm which seems similar to WADIA's) and too noisy digital powersupply lines jittering the DAC....

Suggest the ultimate Upgrade to him:

Go to Vinyl. To my ears even on something like the big Wadia, Levinson, Spectral, Audio Synthesis and Acoustic Precisition gear CD plainly sucks....

Ciao Thorsten
