an experience with CD67 upgrade

203.95.68.137

Hi,

I have changed up the Opamp and HDAM supply caps (C651to C654 , C611 to C614) to Elna Cerafine 1000uF/16V bypassed with 10uF Cerafines. I was absolutely SHOCKED with the difference i heard .... it was a HUGE IMPROVEMENT ...... the sound became very transparent and clear and smooth from the very very low to the highs ..... very well balanced and lovely sound+dynamics and i could turn up the volume loud without experiencing any discomfort. In fact i just wanted to keep going louder ...... :-)

I then changed up the Mains Supply Caps C803 & C804 to ordinary Elna 6800uF/63V bypass with 0.22uF/100V ; and changed up the C805 and C806 to 4700uF/16V bypass with 0.22uF/100V. Also , i removed the C659 and C660 caps at the output (they were put in for ESD protection, i think). I found the highs to be too much for the comfort of my ears and i could not bear to turn up the volume.
I don't think the C803,804,805,806 caused this change as they are on the Mains part. Rather i think the removal of C659 and C660 which were on the signal path near the Cinch output, are allowing the highs to come through more. Am i right ?

Anyway, i shall not put back in the C659 and C660 yet since i am looking to upgrade the JRC NJM2114D Opamp to the National LM6172IN. This should reduce the harshness of the treble. Also , i read from Thorsten's article that changing the Filter Caps (CD21-CD24, C605-C608) to Philips 1% Polystyrene caps will somewhat smoothen the sound. Am i right on these 2 points ?
Anyone can advise where i can order the Philips 1% Polystyrene caps on the net ?

Thanks in advance.
Cheers to all music lovers out there.
