Are these Scientific Conversions transformers, and if so, where'd you get them? You should try the tran in the DI/O first since it's not that hard to do and may work fine. If it doesn't work with your CDP, then also put a similar tran in your CDP just the way you say - that's what I did. Without seeing your CDP output circuit, I'm guessing (I had to trace my circuit to see what I had), but should be OK for a typical S/PDIF output circuit. The (theoretical) ideal is transformers at both ends so that your digital cable is completely isolated.
