Mine are about 1/2in off the floor. I beleive the mesh is mainly to stop vermin from nesting in the tubes - don't go crazy about it. I used some old flyscreen i had lying around with a bit of stocking material (courtesy of my wife) stretched over and tacked across the bottom of the tubes.
