HiI have tried the bicycle tyre and found it to be absolutely excellent. In my case I put the bicycle tyre between two sheets of MDF and then put my CD player on that.
I am, in fact, a cyclist and have found this unlikely conjoining of hobbies rather intriguing :)
There is an excellent small size of bicycle tyre which is I think ideal for this, it is the 20" size also known as 406. Cycling shops will know what you mean by 406 even in the US.
Keeping the pressure very low is best no doubt.
I found that there was an increase in detail from my Meridian 206B CD player. Most notable those was that the "shape" of the sound became more apparent. What I mean by that odd notion is that the nature of piano key strikes, for example, became much clearer, so a jazz pianist would sound much much more expressive.
On the wider topic of isolation I have all my stuff on wall shelves. These are ones I bought called "Wallnut II" and I bought them at the link at the bottom.
I have one of these shelves for each hi-fi thing. Each Wallnut II can take two things if need be but I simply leave off the bottom of the two shelves in the Wallnut II.
The spikes on the Wallnut II protrude from the top so it is easy then to put a larger piece of MDF than that supplied and use the standard spikes. With this larger piece of MDF then you can easily put the 20" 406 inner tube on that.
I have the Wallnut IIs rawl bolted to the wall. It is vital to have solid brick walls for the Wallnut IIs of course. I used 6 mm rawl bolts, first drilling out the 4 mm standard holes in the Wallnut IIs.
The rawl bolts are extremely strong indeed and the rigidity of my total arrangement is very good indeed!
I've found this comprehensive approach to supporting my stuff to bring tremendous benefits in sound quality.
