Re: Isolation...... what to do

Hi Dholai,

I have had excellent results by applying seismic isolation in multiple planes.

Roller bearings provide numerous benefits as they isolate from horizontally induced seismic disturbance. They have been, in my experience, the single most effective isolation tweak I've heard. Search the tweak forum for "roller bearings", "Aurios", "Hip Joints" and "Econo" (for an inexpensive demo of their effectiveness).

The benefits of roller bearings can be greatly extended by combining them with air bearings which will provide seismic isolation in the vertical plane. I've seen much criticism of air bearings where the main objections seem to be a "softening" of frequency response and dynamics. My experience has shown me this is true only when the air bearing has too much air in it. Many use what they call "partially" inflated bicycle tire inner tubes. I would say "minimally" inflated should be the goal. Once there is enough air to support whatever is being held up only on rubber, any additional air will rapidly diminish the effectiveness of the air bearing, resulting in exactly what many complain about. On the other hand, proper (i.e. minimal) inflation will yield an appreciable sonic extension of the benefits from the roller bearings, including "darker" silences, greater bass extension and dynamic punch and a wider, deeper soundstage (provided of course, these are present on the source material).

In sum, my suggestion is to try the following:
support shelf, air bearing, "floating platform" (experiment with different materials... I like maple), roller bearings, component.

Hope this helps.
Happy Listening!
Barry
