I found that plugging the port in my bass-reflex loaded Ambience ribbon hybrids did not tighten the bass - the culprit wasn't the bass-reflex tuning which seems to be very good. The sound with the plugged port was less flowing, the upper bass rather a bit congested. But straws in the port are very good, but not enormous in effect.
DIY roller blocks *even under your speakers* if they allow for it weight-wise would get one of two Oscars for cleaning up bass muddling (kind of a positive room feedback) and everything else too..
The other Oscar goes for this simple trick, which i got from laterally thinking on cushion room tunes:
Place triangles of cardboard of an unused box (the double layer cardboard).
Triangles with a side-length in my case of ca. one foot sidelength did the trick. I fixed them with a piece of Blue-Tak (or doublestick foamtape) on each point diagonally in the room corners. They must be placed in such a way, that they cut all right angles (like copping of the point of the corner). The triangle sides must be slightly concave so they do *not* touch the wall and freely vibrate between these three dots. If they are painted or coated white they even do not look ugly in a major way.
A piece in each floor corner cleaned up the bass in my almost cubic room in an amazing way. It did cost me an empty box... poor me :-(
