I believe both of the coils are air coils. I think I will do a slow upgrade so that I can tell how each part affects the sound. I will probably do the following in order:1. Replace binding posts with Cardas CCGRS and damp inside of binding post cover (which is also the inside of the low pass coil) with dynamat.
2. Replace resistor with Caddock (would like to use TO220 package but need 5W without heatsink). Replace the capacitors with Auricaps (I may do only the tweeter caps first.)
3. Try to get some DCR and wiring information from Polk. If they indicate that lesser DCR values will not degrade performance, I may change the coils. Same with the wiring. If I change the coils, I will relocate the XO outside the box (I would do this initially, but the low pass coil is wrapped around the binding post cover plate). What material makes a good XO box? wood?
If there will be large sonic returns to just externally locating the stock XO, I can just remove the whole original crossover and find a new speaker post cover to replace the stock one. I could then locate the original XO in a new box and move the binding posts out from the middle of the low pass coil. Comments welcome.
Thanks!
