Re: Need crossover upgrade help for older speakers...

198.152.13.69

I'm replacing the binding posts on some vintage Polk speakers (RTA 15t). The original posts refuse to tighten down. I've been looking at the Cardas CCGRS binding posts as possible replacements. *****Cardas makes good BP's. I think you will be very happy. ****88

The originals appear to be hot glued. ****Looks to me like the glue secures the bolt from loosening from vibration****

The crossover is actually attached to the binding post cover. **I'd move it if I could, but the coil may be a headache. ***

The low pass coil is wound around the black cover. *****Can it be seperated? and moved? ***

I was wondering if I should solder the new terminals in place rather than screwing them to the posts.***what terminals? This appears to be the first time you mentioned them. *****

Should I re-hot glue them?***I wouldn't worry about it****

Newbie crossover question:
I have not been able to find any info on "t.i." capacitors and was wondering if anyone could suggest upgrade capacitors. ****Never heard of them either. It'll be tough to find 20uf caps - try Solen for a more cost effective solution. I like RelCap 12uf PPFMXS caps. All caps sound different.

I was looking at the Caddock MP820/821 for the tweeter resistor replacement. Any better suggestions for resistor replacement?
****I'm not sure***

Are there any benefits to rewiring the speakers**depends on how good the old wire was and the new wire is, you need someone with Polk experience to answer this.*** or damping the crossover circuit board? I was also wondering what the effects were of having the low pass coil coiled around the speaker terminals. Should I shield the terminals somehow?**I don't know but I can't imagine its any good - one more reason to move the coil.***

I'm not really looking to drastically rebuild or come up with a new crossover design, but all suggestions will be considered. I just got the tweaking bug after being forced to replace the binding posts.
