Re: John Curl: Have you played with the Tripath?

Thanks for your comments, particularly about the various versions of the evaluation board--as you know, you and I have traded remarks on the Tripath previously on this site.

As for the eval board being "the same" as the stock Bel Canto Evo, I agree that it's not likely, but I also feel that there is probably not a huge difference, either, if one discounts the input op-amps that Bel Canto uses to allow balanced inputs.

Short of having an actual schematic, the best way to judge is to view photos of the most recent EVo version, which can be found at:

http://www.precisioncomputer.com/ocean/MagUp/BCEvo/EVo.html

It looks to me as if the power supply is nothing special. In fact, Bel Canto uses a 500VA transformer (instead of 1000VA), but this is possibile because of the inverted signal to one channel, which allows the two channels to work "out of phase" thereby increasing efficiency. I suppose in this era of energy crises and rolling blackouts, that's not a bad thing.

I don't see any componentry in or around the power supply that would indicate EMI filtering.

To reiterate, I would welcome detailed measurements of the distortion spectrum of the 200wpc eval board, but to date, only Tripath has published anything (Stereophile's data pertained to the EVo 200.2). If there is any "nasty business" in the output of the Tripath, it certainly doesn't seem to have any effect on the actual sound. Even Mr Curl acknowledges that his distortion measurements merely confirm what Tripath has published in their own application notes, and those distortion figures are pretty impressive. But, as we all know, measurements don't always tell the whole story.
