If you're just using the plastic bulb or spring type solder sucker, try instead a desoldering iron. This guy heats the solder pad with a (replaceable)hollow tip and incorporates the bulb into the iron's handle.The really amazing thing is that Radio Shack carries these.
Of course now that I've said that it's a good product, they will have it discontinued and off the shelves in the next two weeks...
