I built a pair of speakers last spring break using rat-shack drivers that sounded phan-tastic...I built cone shaped boxes out of pine *uhum, i was a newbie* and mounted the drivers flush. I found that after damping the enclosure, the cone very effectively trapped the backwave, and helped focus the speaker output. While I used four panels to create my cone, five panels would be optimal, since they would all be non-parallel, but would treat the driver the same way, since they are all equally aligned to the driver. If you extend this concept, this non-parallel cone could be built to a length 1/5lambda, or wavelength, to create a transmission line...without the parallel walls, you could avoid some of the nasty wave pattern resonance that some people grumble about with such enclosures. I have considered building this, but lack the space for the finished product, since my dorm room is VERY small.
Basically, if you want focused, articulate sound, and do not mind having a lower overall output (since, to my understanding, the backwave is pretty well damped out), this was a great shape for me to play with, and you may have some luck with it. Of course, the cone can be bent to maintain a taller, less deep cabinet.
