I just finished building my Salamander clone shelving with mdf. I was able to buy mdf veneered with Cherry. Needless to say it looks very nice, tung oil finish and then a coat of nice wax. Edgebanding that was pre-glued worked beautifully. Made speakers a while back from the same stuff, went out and bough 1/4" rounded moulding and left the corners open, that handled the edges on the speaker. All the stuff had to be bought at wood specialty stores, not HD or Lowes. Check with your local woodworker's guild, they may have recommendations on where to find stuff at a good price.
