You could paint the MDF, but the edges need lots of filler and paint to get 'em smooth. Why not put the plywood on the outside and stain it? Of course you'd have to use veneered plywood. Or, you could veneer the MDF. My experience with veneering, it takes at least 2 coats of contact cement or plenty of yellow carpenter's clue on for good adhesion to the veneer.
