Not to drag this out, but...
If you have three amps driving a three way speaker, and don't want to load the preamp with two amps and their preceding passive XO's, you can do it this way:
Drive the amp for the tweeter fullrange from the preamp, this way the preamp only drives one amp. Use passive filters to the tweeter as normal for non-active speakers. Drive the two passive filter networks to the mid and bass amps from this amp as well. Since the passive filters to the mid and bass amps is an easy load for a power amp, with no nasty current sucking impedances or phase shifts, the tweeter amp is not stressed and will still play just as nicely into the tweeter even though it handles the entire frequency spectrum. Now you have a passive system where you can easily have up to fourth order XOs without attenuation of the signals or excessive loading of the preamp.
