Active speakers have all the benefits going for them: optimized amplifier gain for the driver's sensitivity, optimized bandwidth which is more acurate since amps have purely resistive (and constant) input impedances, very short wiring to the driver(if amps built into speaker cabinet that is), etc, etc. Building a variable gain into one or all amps also gives you the ability to fine tune the system according to room or listening material. All in all a very good idea.
The difficult part is the crossovers to all the amps. No more difficult than the crossovers in the speaker, which must be removed by the way or you'll end up with excessive cutoff slopes and phase shifts. There are many ways of implementing the XOs, this again gives more options to fine tune the systm after your needs than conventional systems.
1.The most common would be active XO's between preamp and amps.
2.Another way is passive XO's which leaves less devices in the signal path, potentially more pure in a way. Passive XO's aren't so easy to implement if you want three amps and higher than first order cutoffs since this will be very hard for the preamp to drive.
There is another way to do passives though: Let the amp driving the midrange also drive the XO for the bass amp. Typical gain of power amps is around 30, so not only do you have a source that can drive high order passive crossovers, but you can allow for attenuation in the crossover and still have enough signal amplitude to drive the bass amp at equal levels. As a matter of fact you can get higher signals for the bass amp if required, so the bass may be boosted without the need for an active XO with gain.
The High and mid amps can be driven with passive XO's between the preamp and amps since two isn't such a hefty load for the preamp. There are many ways of doing this and this is just a suggestion for one of them. I've done it like this for years, and get the purity of good passive XO's and actively driven speakers and am happy with that.
