Active will get you some quite serious improvement , one doesnt have to use "do it all" amps as they can be tailored to the exact characteristics of the drivers.
Generally bypassing a passive x/over will allow one a louder cleaner and more impactful sound if active is done well.
I think you *will* benefit in the bass.
A DSP based crossover would be ideal , however this requires multiple DACS etc.
(I use meridian DSP active speakers and they sound great , potent , extended , clean , fantastic imagery etc )
