Andrew,That's completely normal behavior.
I did the same thing with a Pioneer integrated amplifier when I was a high-school kid in 1978. Bought it with summer job earnings, and proceeded to, err, rework it.
Bypassed all of the speaker selector switch stuff, and soldered the speaker cables directly to the inductors after the output stage. I had a Sansui turntable, which I tricked it out by adding butyl rubber tape and lead sheet to the platter. Various cartridges were filled up with epoxy to dampen resonances, or cut and filed completely open (de-nuded) to remove the source of the resonances. And so on.
So you're perfectly normal. At least as seen from the viewpoint of another crazy :-).
