RE: Barry's Isolation Platforms - marble isn't hard enough

One problem with using things like this is that they may not do what they are supposed to .

The basic issue here is that if one imagines both the ball and plate are “infinitely hard”, then the contact area is infinitely small and so contact pressure infinity high. Substituting real materials like steel and smooth stone, it is easy to picture how the material will spall (pit from pressure). Ball bearings and rail road wheels work the same way, a VERY tiny contact area produces very low friction BUT requires exotic steel that resists spalling.

If isolation is really the goal, you would be much better off looking at things scientifically designed to do that job instead of a visually appealing design.

At the link below are some samples from one company, you will notice none of the real devices made to do this job (vibration isolation) look anything like pointy feet or other hifi oriented products, these are designed by function / performance not looks, so they are more difficult to incorporate and have to be based on the weight being suspended. On the other hand, they really work.
