Image: Furutech FI-15E(G) gold IEC connector (12 AWG maximum termination size unless direct soldered)I’ve been fortunate enough to have at any given time, a choice out of a number of AC connector make/model/types to terminate various power cords with in order to configure a customized power cord that presents a desired sonic signature when it’s placed on a particular audio component. Not to be confused with using a power cord as a “tone control”, (rather) I mean using, or not using, power cords, AC connectors, and AC outlets to better maximize a components greater performance level potential and more to the heart its greater musicality (not to be confused with too euphonic sounding). So, here’s just a quick note about a tweak for those with power cords terminated with the quite popular moderate-cost level copper Furutech FI-11M(Cu) AC plug and silver Furutech FI-11(Ag) IEC connector combo:
1. The popular copper Furutech FI-11M(Cu) AC plug presents a very focused soundstage. It essentially sounds very neutral (not too analytical sounding nor too lush sounding). The choice of IEC connector can make a real difference in how the Furutech FI-11M(Cu) AC plugs sonic signature is affected by the influence of that IEC connectors particular tonality (think tone as in ‘timbral information’, not just aspects of tonal balance and frequency extremes).
2. The popular mate for the copper Furutech FI-11M(Cu) AC plug is the silver Furutech FI-11(Ag) IEC connector which presents much of the FI-11M(Cu) AC plugs very focused soundstage and neutral tonality, but with just a little push in the leading edge of an image without making it sound too etched or brittle.
3. Swapping-out a silver Furutech FI-11(Ag) IEC connector in the match with a gold IEC connector such as a gold Furutech FI-11(G) IEC connector or a gold Furutech FI-15E(G) IEC connector can help present more tonal bloom warmth and a generally more laid back sonic signature and relaxed focus without sounding euphonically colored albeit without not as much forward a soundstage.
4. Solid state power amplifiers can perhaps benefit most from the use of this mentioned gold IEC connector modification tweak. Case in point is the also moderate-cost level VH Audio Flavor 2 (also Flavor 1, 3, and 4) power cord terminated with a copper Furutech FI-11M(Cu) AC plug and silver Furutech FI-11(Ag) IEC connector placed on a solid state Muse Model One Hundred power amplifier in a second system. When the silver Furutech FI-11(Ag) IEC connector was replaced with a Furutech FI-15E(G) IEC connector, the MOSFET warmth of the Muse 100 is presented with greater liquidity after re-termination with the gold IEC connector.
YMMV
