Around 12" normally work without much trouble. Really, the rule is "as short as possible but no more than 12Inch".

1.5m? That is about the worst lenth.
One particular company promotes a length of 5m as best for SPDIF cables, as this length shifts the the reflections outside the trigger window of the receiver. This actually works quite well, but things are not as simple as that.
First, the best length depends on the rise time of the source and the actual propagation speed of the signal in the cable, plus the "trigger window" time of the receiver. All these are variables and not constants.
However, the (male the cable long enough so it's delay is a significant fraction of the signal period works well, as does my "keep it really short". Most of the stuff in-between is in trouble land.
