From the standpoint of the electrical field and the magnetic fields, the electrical field falls off in a square law fashion, the magnetic field falls off in the cubed law fashion, thus ill effects will be greatly reduced in just a few inches.
However, if you use carbon fiber as a support element, then the cable jacket will be in contact with the CONDUCTIVE carbon fiber, and thus tending to short out the electrical field right at those locations.
Not recommended to create such a short in the electrical field.
Use the leather.
