DIY if you can

I've found that power supplies are much more important than you'd believe. Key is to know what you are building. Basically, I think you're just working with a transformer, so if you get the right output V and A readings, then it's a matter of quality of transformer and any simple AC filtering scheme you like.

I built one for my MF X10d and it works great compared to ANY wall wart. I used a good quality torroid of the right input/output, housed it properly, damped it mechanically, DIYed filtered and shielded PC and output power cable. It was a fun project. Probably cost me about $35-45 in parts, but am super satisfied witht the upgrade in sound and enjoyed the experience.

OK, true confession: I built it 3 times! Time one without shielded PC and cabling and it worked great. Tried to rebuild it with new design PC and cabling and wasn't careful, so shorted and burnt out the torroidal transformer! My fault, really. So bought a new torroid and rebuilt the PC and cable very very very carefully and retested for shorts several times, crossed my fingers and turned it on. Voila!

I do use the TI-shielded and grounded AC filtering scheme on this, just so you know. But it worked very well without all the fancy filtering and cabling too, just not quite as well as with the upgrades.
