Magnet wire with cotton insulation as speaker wire

What do you think? I've been reading about the virtues of Speltz's Anticables and thought I'd go the cheapskate route (think I've mentioned this already). I found this stuff that, as it turns out, has no other form of insulation other than cotton (though it might be impregnated with some other material, like beeswax). I've seen magnet wire out there that has silk as an insulator, as well as some form of varnish on the wire. This makes sense as to being able to prevent corrosion but what about this varnishless, cotton-insulated wire? Surely something would like this would have never been created if the copper was subject to oxidation? Is this not too good to be true?
