RE: Glasse Audio Desk Systeme

Sorry stator 99, I didn't see your follow-up post until a moment ago, or I would have fired this off before.

Regarding the areas to be sanded, I wouldn't necessarily sand the surface of the ablated edge, as the ablation has really done enough of that for you. In my experience, it hasn't made a noticeable improvement to sand the outside edge of the disc post-cutting, but I only did the experiment once, long ago. You could try and see if it improves the sound in your system, but frankly, I wouldn't. Too dangerous with that cut edge sloping TOWARDS the information area of the disc. One slip and you've sanded the information area and now you may have damaged the last cut on your disc. Again, just not worth it for questionable benefit. Shaving roughs it up enough, I suspect. But you can try, and if you get good results, let us know.

The areas I feel provide excellent results with sanding are the top center section around the spindle hole that is clear (if there is a label or anything else already there, don't sand, please), the bottom center section around the spindle hole (which is basically always clear on all discs, and should therefore always be sanded), and the inner edge of the spindle hole itself. Don't over-do it, just enough to make the area look 'foggy'. You'll see what I mean. Don't gouge or scour, just gently but firmly sand in small circular motions until the whole clear area is now foggy-looking.

Again, very sorry if I didn't make clear in the previous post about what areas to sand. And for those who don't have a disc shaver (yet), by all means, sand the outer edge! It is the place that really is the most sonically beneficial, but the others listed are close in effect and certainly worthwhile tweaks that are basically FREE! (My favorite kind of tweak!)

As for grit type, again, apologies. The other gentleman I believe is correct, with the finer grits giving the best effects. The actual number of the sandpaper I use is down the hill behind my house about 250' in my Music Room, where I keep the Reference System and all my 'tweaking' materials. It's about 27 degrees outside right now, with a 30 mph windchill bringing it down to around a toasty 12 degrees, so I won't be going down to check for you tonite. (Tomorrow, maybe. If it warms up.) But I think the gentleman nailed it with 400 grit or so. Really fine grit is all you need; just make sure it is able to cloud/fog up the clear areas as noted above.

As for painting the tray of your CD player, that's a GREAT tweak, if your player is out of warranty. If not, get some old CD Greenbacks that UncleStu used to sell and cut to size, using blu-tak to hold in place for easy removal. I'm sure other audiophiles have other stuff that would work just as well, if not better, and hopefully they'll chime in. That Machina Dynamica Turquoise mat sounds like it might be interesting to try, if it is not ridiculously expensive. The Greenbacks kick butt if you can find them or cheap knock-offs. Music Direct sells something similar for a ridiculous sum, but I suspect the geniuses here at the Asylum can give you better info in this regard than I can. There has to be cheap green-colored thin plastic CD mats (that can be cut to size) available for audiophiles. But maybe not. I simply don't know. Hell, just plain old plastic 8" x 10" sheets will work, if the color is right and the thickness is minimal (for clearance purposes.) Any recommendations, Inmates?

As for poster-paint, I always used the Uchida brand green opaque paint markers, but they are now defunct due to the banning of xylene in such products ("That smell! That xylene smell! I love the smell of xylene in the morning. It smells like ......... victory!") I don't know exactly what 'poster paint' is either, but I suspect a quick peek at an arts supply store's website would quickly inform us, if the gentleman who discussed the poster paint doesn't tell us beforehand. I seem to recall he may have mentioned the type of poster-paint pen he recommended, but cannot be sure. (I currently suffer from 'CRS' syndrome -- "Can't Remember Shit". Old age and Alzheimer's suck, don't they?)

Hope any of this helps. Sorry I didn't see your request for further info previously.

Happy New Year and HAPPY LISTENING!!
