The BBC speakers used thin birch ply but loaded the panels with bituminous felt for damping. The concept was though that the mid range was most important to the BBC so the damped thin walls were superb in the mids because of a lower resonant frequency but there was a compromise in the bass because of the low resonant frequency of the cabinet wall construction.
