I can't imagine the soundstage could have much depth with the speakers so close to the wall and the rest of the gear right in-between them. With a 35' room you should be able to pull them out much farther - up to seven feet. Of course if they have limited frequency response, you may then feel lack lack enough bass. If you haven't already done so, speaker placement might be your best move before you change much else (although I agree a screen that disappears would be ideal).
