I do not know whether you subscribe to the view that wood influences the overal sound, but if you do, you may find my experience useful.
Maple is an excellent choice for shelving, pine is definitelly not for audio. If budget is limited, the best way to go is MDF. MDF can be spray-painted with any car paint or veneered. A piece of 10"x15" Dynamat or similar can be glued under each shelf to deaden vibration. Some people reported good results with a shelf made of bubble wrap sandwiched between two MDF plates.
