Ok let me explain exactly what im looking to do. I have a new Apple Powerbook that I am going to be using for digital music as well as regular computer tasks(net browsing, email..etc). I use the Pbook as my desktop and my portable computer. So I would like to add a small high quality system in the computer room. I would like to build an amp/dac combo in a single box with a USB or firewire input to plug in my Pbook. I see DIY Paradise or Redwine Audio had a similar idea on thier website by building the amp and DAC in one box. I wanna do that but also add a USB input, I could possibly use the guts from a M-audio transit??Has anyone built something similar to this??? Whats an easier build, a ganclone or tripath based amp?? The tri[path looks easier to me and can be powered by a battery so no power supply to build which is a plus for me right now being a beginer. I already have a battery I can use its a 2amp SLA i believe it was scavenged from an alarm box or something im not sure but it works and was free. WOuld 2amp be enough juice to run the amp and dac? Any other ideas please let me know. Is there any reason not to build it into one box??? I plan on seperating the circuits so they dont interfere with each other.
What do you all think is it a good idea?? How much would something like that cost to build on average? Id like to keep it under $500 or so if possible.
