Re: Antique Sound Lab Hurricane DT schematics are here.

Hi Jeffrey,
Congrats on a fine decission. The Hurricanes are truly amazing amplifiers. As soon as I am finished with the 8 pair I am currently modifying, I am going to modify a few for myself as well as two pair of Monsoons.

Did you buy these new?

Yes, the current production versions use those green military looking Illusion PIO capacitors for the coupling positions. If you have the aluminum chassis, it is nice that they are mounted on thier own mounting strip rather than soldered to the copper ground bars as in previous versions. The green PIOs are not to bad but I have a box of a few hundred of them. Let me point one thing out to you before you start buying parts to upgrade. The input stage coupling capacitors (the ones located behing the face plate) are actually .22uF rather than the .47uF as is probably shown on your schematic.

The "extra" transformer is far from a little filament tranny and is in fact as beefy and heavy as the mains tranny. What you have is a mains, secondary mains, output and the PS choke located within the smalles cover in the front.

As far as those PS bypass caps, leave em in there but add a few more bypass units. I use the V-Cap OIMP 1uF and Teflon .10uF on each of the filter caps. don't forget about those diodes!!!

Above (or below, I don't remember where it shows) is a picture of an older version I just finished up for a customer. The covers and fave are done in deep red powder coat that is wet sanded and buffed to a high gloss. The speakers in this picture are 98dB and the amps are running in triode for 120 watts. Even with this older version that can be noisy, you needto be 12 inches from the TAD-4001 compression driver to hear even a hint of noise!!!!!
In the next week or so, I will be bi-amping these speakers with two pair of Extreme Canes. Should be interesting.

Enjoy the Canes> I sure do. I always have a pair up and running. They may not be mine but at least I get to spend a few days with each pair before they head out to thier owners.

Keep in touch with me.

Bill
