Chris: Let me preface by saying these comments come from nothing more than my thoughts, and that I too have a similar project to yours on my list. (In my case, I have a pair of smallish full-range B&W car speakers, and a mating pair of tweeters. Tech support was able to recommend me a minimum box size, an I was going to use the "golden ratio" to build a box this size or bigger. But that is for a rainy day far down the road). On to your case .... The car speakers are likely anticipated to be in a near-infinite baffle installationl; i.e. the volume behind them is huge. Why not try them in a similar way at home? There have been speakers built in the past that in very simple terms look like a 5-sided box, i.e. an open back. Presumably the sides make the front seem bigger (like wing tips on an aircraft), but this I do not know. These are just my rambling thoughts, but maybe if you had a sheet of plywood or MDF, stiff enough not to flex as you played it, that would look to the speaker like the trunk of a car. But I could ne way off base here. Perhaps a search in the vault about "infinite baffle" would enlighten. Whatever you try, please let us know here what happens. Even if your results are poor, it may show some of us the road to avaoid. Good luck!
