To cut circles you do not need a plunge router. The trim router will be easier to handle so it should be safer. And as was mentioned earlier take a bit at a time versus trying to go deep.I use the Jasper jig this way. You drill the pilot hole. Then do a shallow route of maybe a 1/2 inch on one side, flip it over and then finish it from the other.
I have done it both ways and both ways work perfectly. I do the flip process if working with plywood or veneered surfaces.
