Precisely…

Everest's book, which is the source of the information quoted, goes much further and points out that 'ideal' reverberation time varies depending on a lot of things:

it reduces as room size reduces;
it is longer for music and shorter for speech;
it is shorter for vocal music than for instrumental music;
it is shorter for chamber music than for symphonic and organ music.

Put all that together and you will come up with a feeling that a much shorter reverberation time than .54 seconds would be preferred for a room of the size of most living rooms/listening rooms for a person who likes a lot of vocal and small group music. Even someone with a preference for symphonic and organ music is probably going to prefer a shorter reverberation time than that in many normal household-sized rooms.

Everest never goes anywhere near recommending a single reverberation time as ideal for most listening rooms, and he is at pains to stress the fact that there is a range of times that will suit both voice and music to different degrees and to stress the relationship between room volume and an appropriate reverberation time.
