they use old technology, a large resistive copper coil dimmer with a carbon wiper, no semiconductors anywhere in the circuit, totally buzzless, still the best article on the market... large and expensive, will not drop into a standard switchbox, an all around beast, especially the 1800 watt model.... think of it as another component
