BUF634 problem with midrange grit

I'm having difficulty using Burr Brown BUF634 buffers on each phase of the balanced output of two Audio Consulting silver-wire transformers that comprise the analog output stage of my highly modified Sony SCD-1 player. The buffers improve dynamics, but at the cost of some mild midrange grain/distortion.

The SCD-1 XLRs are connected through 1.5 meters of Audioquest Diamond silver interconnect to a BAT tube preamp with an input impedance of 100K per phase minimum.

I tried powering the buffers on the player's internal +/- 7V, 9V, and 16V sources. I tried them on batteries, using AA alkalines configured as +/-3V, 4.5V, and 6V, running in series straight to the buffers, and also with some Elna Audio caps across the battery terminals in values such as 470uF, 1000uf, and 10,000uf. I tried grounding each signal phase on the output from the buffers with a 1K resistor. It sounds less hashy on batteries, maybe even a little better yet with the 470uF caps, but I just can't make 'em sing. Any thoughts?

Dave
