If you basically rest the speakers on the sand, the sand is pressed together and will not react to vibration as you would want... ie it will not be able to vibrate freely and rub itself all over the place and make heat blah blah.
You should stand the speaker and whatever arrangement in the tray and then add the sand around the "stand" so that the sand can move freely.
Well worth the thinking about.
