You can CERTAINLY hear the difference, often positive, with PC upgrades and you can DIY these quite cheaply. Your real source of info might be on Cable Asylum.I've DIYed a couple now using different cheap materials and designs much to my delight in the results (after burn in). I've found SOOW 12/4 to work. I've used Alan Maher's design on THHN and it worked well.
The MC cabling you describe sounds very good in specs. You might want to write Alan Maher (audionutge@yahoo.com) and ask if this is similar to what he recommended for the "Perfect Cable" DIY.
