Your story reminds me of the time my wife ran a vacuum cleaner up against a floor lamp and the sharp metal edge under the base quickly sawed through the power cord.You can attach an in-line IEC jack to the remains of your power cord if you want to experiment with fancy cords before you get involved with modifying the chassis.
