Heat will cause any electronic component to fail more quickly than it would otherwise. However, unless your baseboard heater was causing a tremendous temperature rise in your CD player, I suspect it was the jostling of moving the thing around that caused it to finally let go. The things that usually fail first in any electronic gear are the electrolytic capacitors. They lose the liquid in their electrolytes gradually, and more quickly the warmer their surroundings. The innards can become mechanically loose and susceptible to shock. Often they stop working as filters and cause degraded sound, but sometimes they create a hard short. Your transformer may be smoked, and this would be difficult to replace.
