I was speaking of a typical room situation, where laying a bass trap down on it's side along one wall or the other would generally put it below the level of furniture, racks, even the speakers themselves.Yes, if looked at in isolation, they would still diffuse mids/highs in a vertical spread.
However, most of the studies I have seen with respect to stereo imaging, have found that in a typical room, with carpet, and all other surfaces more or less reflective, that lateral reflections (side to side, and to a lesser extent, front to back) add more to image depth and width than do vertical reflections, which can add to image height, but often distort it to be too big.
As for which room modes get absoprbed more, there may be a SLIGHTLY preferential absorption of certain modes depending on where the trap is placed. Placing the trap in the traditional vertical orientation would tend to absorb the modes associated with the floor to ceiling dimensions, slightly more than the other two dimensional modes.
This is a good thing, as the higher frequency modes are the ones that mess with the midbass, and are more audible as a coloration. Thjis is for most rooms, there are exceptions involving atypical sized rooms.Laying the trap down against the side wall would focus on the front to back dimension modes, and laying it down along the front/back wall would tend to focus on the side to side modes.
Again, these are very slight effects, and should not dictate final orientation/placement, as the reflecting surface aspect of diffusion is much more imprtant to the overall soundfield, and even though the traps are working to damp the bass modes in the room, they also can provide some signficant diffusion benefits as well, and this diffusion should be of the lateral sort for best results.
I hope this answers your questions on the subject, if not, please continue.
