Here's my understanding...Imaging is usually effected by coherent reflections and diffusion is applied to break up these coherent reflections. Our ears are situated on a horizontal plane and its the stereo effect the ear placement provides that creates the image. As a result it is only necessary to break up coherent reflections on the horizontal plane as those are the reflections which are detrimental to imaging. If we had three ears (one on the vertical plane) then it would be necessary to diffuse vertical coherent reflections as well.
The reflection point which is coherent in an audio system is going to be speaker-shaped (tall and thin) as it's a coherent reflection of the radiating speaker. Thus the diffuser need only be similarly shaped (tall and thin, though a wider diffuser won't hurt matters). Thus if you're diffusing a coherent reflection with a tube trap you should place it in an orientation that mimics the speaker's shape: the tall/thin way instead of the short/wide way.
