Thanks.I tried some higher value resistors - 1k for R1 & 10K for R2 (I didn't have a 1K1 on hand for R1). Nothing burned up this time, but there seems to be no regulation. Maybe the LM317 died quietly with no smoke or light show. I did have a diode across pins 2 & 3. Is there a way to test if it is still working with a DVM?
I wanted the 30000uF for the ripple filtration rather than because I need massive reserves. Would 10000uF be more reasonable for the LM317? Is there a formula to figure out how much current a capacitor can deliver? I presume it's the current from 30000uF that is the problem for the LM317.
Obviously this is my first attempt at designing a power supply. :) I am getting a nice steady 22.3V without regulation... But I really wanted a regulated supply.
