Some damping materials are less effective on certain parts, so that adding enough of them to do some damping also increases the mass and lowers the resonant frequency. My Atma-Sphere MA-1s are kits that I built on the old "DeLuxe" chassis (no longer available). They had large, heavy aluminum front panels and macho handles. When I started damping the chassis, I had positive results from damping the metal to which the tubes and transformers are mounted with Dynamat X-treme. However, adding this damping material to these heavy front panels served only to lower and purify their ringing tones. The sound got worse!
I removed the panels and handles, and made new covers for the fronts of the amps out of some Sonex foam and some frames cut from polypropylene sheets. This stuff is already damped by its nature. The sound got better!
There may be a more effective damping material for thick aluminum panels, but I'm happy with the sound I got from removing them altogether.
