This is a matter of opinion it seems, but I think there are a couple rules of thumb you can count on.1. If all else is equal, I try to use the lowest ESR cap I can. The more the cap behaves like a pure capacitor the better it's going to be.
2. For a given ESR, I find very little difference in the sound of PS caps. IMHO, most of the differences people hear are related to ESR.
3. I try to use the highest voltage (within reason) rated caps that will fit properly in place physically.
4. To me, a larger cap (of good quality) virtually always makes at least a small change for the better sound-wise.
