I salvaged an aging cheapo entertaninment center with a table saw and elbow grease and turned it into a nice audio rack. I created an extra board the same width for underneath which it sits on that is flat against the floor in an attempt to minimize any carpet marks. I already knew this was taboo in audioland when I made it, noticing it the most when I walk up to cue a new song on the turntable and the tonearm starts to bounce just as I get there. Would like to make some spikes for the bottom of it by grinding down some long screws but didn't know how much weight or damage(that may be too strong of a term) would occur from a fair number of components sitting on it. I would go with at least 4 spikes but resting on them would be an Oracle turntable, Meridian preamp, two Rotel amps, tape deck and cd recorder, along with the weight of the rack itself which I'm estimating at 40+ lbs. On the bottom shelves I swapped the cdr/tape for my tube amp which I'm making a separate stand for and that saved me about a net 25 lbs. Aren't the spikes going to dig themselves pretty far into a wooden floor with that much weight? I know I would never see it being beneath the carpet and padding but still wanted to be careful. I wedged in a narrow support board between the top shelf and the back wall which has eliminated the skipping(awesome easy fix for turntables on a wobbly stand) but still like the idea of some isolation for the rest of the components too. Does anyone have experience loading that much weight(or probably more) on a spiked rack?
