Polyester batting substitute

Hi All,

After clearing up a lot of issues and queries about room treatments I am finishing up with getting everything together to build a whole lot of DIY treatments. My plan for the moment is to build cylindrical bass traps to take care of bass problems (I will be making 16" diameter traps for the corners and a few 9" diameter traps for along the walls between the larger ones). For mid/high frequencies (reflections and echoes) I am making wall panels to place at various locations, consisting of semi-rigid fiberglass boards which I will cover with batting and then with burlap.

1st question: I can get anywhere from 40-160kg/m3 density boards 1-2" thick, which density/thickness is optimal for MF/HF absorption? Some threads I read say about 6lb which is around 40kg/m3 and 1", some threads say the denser the better and 5-6" thick.

I am also having a hard time finding polyester batting here, which I need both for the panels and the tube traps. They do not know what I am even talking about here, and they ALL say to use 'cotton batting', which I know is no good due to HF reflections.

2nd question - what is an appropriate substitute for polyester batting? Would wool batting do? Polycotton?

And finally 3rd question - how thick should it be? I have read on the boards that you guys suggest around 1"-2" thick, but all batting (of any material) I have found is thin, like 0.25". Is it okay to simply make 4+ layers of it making up the total 1-2"?

Thanks for the help.
X
