I see it a bit differently. Resonance of a taut string will most likely be relatively high Q (i.e. it will "sing" at a specific pitch). This isn't the case with a well designed roller bearing.
Also, contact surface of "suspension" consisting of rollers is considerably smaller than that of a whole shelf suspended by strings. I've found smaller contact surfaces to yield greater consistency and repeatablility as the device is tried on different components.
"combination of using strings w/ rollers is excellent."In my experience, using multiple springs in the same axis of motion tends to inhibit performance vs. one spring per axis.
