I hate to tell you this, mate, but you are dead wrong. As a designer of digital controls I routinely mass load Xtals in order to improve short term stability. The results are measurable (and audible in audio gear). For long term stability I place the crystal in a temperature contolled oven; you would probably call this crap too. As they say a little knowlege is dangerous.
